Earth Day 2016: Should we give up meat?

Earth Day’s coming up on Friday, and most of us will have fun opportunities to participate in edu-taining events.

Unfortunately, way too much of the talk will focus on plant-based diets, with vegan diets recommended as the be-all and end-all “green” choice for those committed to saving Planet Earth.

Sadly, it’s not that simple.   Far from contributing to personal and planetary health, plant-based diets encourage people to “feel good” about their “green” consciousness while distracting them from exploring and adopting genuine, sustainable solutions.  I know this sounds controversial, but stay with me.  I have nine talking points.

  1. The true threat to our environment is not animals — which have been covering the earth with manure and emissions for tens of thousands of years — but the globalization and industrialization of agriculture with its unconscionable, factory-farming practices, toxic use of pesticides, herbicides and commercial fertilizers, plundering of natural resources, draining of the water table, and bankrupting of small farmers and cottage industries.
  2. As for all that climate-warming gas, animals emit far less gas when they eat natural, grass-based diets and not unnatural, hard-to-digest feeds manufactured from soybeans, corn and other grains. Plowing pastures and rangeland in order to plant crops is not sustainable and won’t do much to feed the hungry or save the environment. Only about eleven percent of the land on planet earth can be farmed, a percentage that cannot be increased without deforestation, irrigation, chemical fertilizers, and other destructive ecological practices.
  3. Old-fashioned organic mixed-use farms are the answer.   And animals are essential, not optional, for healthy farms. America’s top soil has been devastated by mono cropping, lawns and other unsustainable practices.   While mixing, rotating and composting plants is a start, land cannot be restored without the help of animals.  They are needed not only for their rich manure but for rotational grazing.   Animal waste is truly a horrific problem with factory farming but is valuable and collectible on small, mixed-use farms.   Overgrazing has certainly damaged much of America’s land, but the solution is sustainable grazing practices. And that solution, properly handled, serves the land far better than leaving it alone for “conservation.”As Joel Salatin has described so well in Folks, This Ain’t Normal,  The Sheer Ecstasy of Being a Lunatic Farmer, Everything I Want to Do is Illegal and other books, diversity, interdependence and layering are the keys to honoring and restoring our land.
  4. Animal foods are often blamed for the diseases of modern civilization, including cancer and heart disease.  But the 20th century saw a decline in the consumption of meat, dairy and butter consumption, but a sharp increase in the consumption of sugar, corn syrup, white flour, liquid and partially hydrogenated vegetable oils, artificial flavorings, preservatives and other known health hazard of processed, packaged and fast foods.   Contrary to popular belief, science does not support the idea that saturated fat and cholesterol found in animal products contribute to obesity, diabetes, heart disease and cancer.   All health problems associated with animal products lie with factory farming and other commercial and non-sustainable farming and food processing practices.
  5. As for plant-based diets, vegan diets especially can lead to vitamin, mineral, fatty acid and amino acid deficiencies and imbalances, contributing to myriad health problems, including cancer and heart disease.
  6. The idea that eating low fat could be eco-conscious defies traditional wisdom and common sense.      The low-fat gospel is a key reason why factory farms — including so-called organic factory farms — grow freakish hens with size DD breasts.  Big Agra’s goal with such chickens is to minimize the less-profitable dark meat and maximize the low-fat white meat preferred by “health-conscious” consumers.   The low-fat message pleases Big Pfood immensely because it profits mightily when whole foods are divided into several different products — which is to say multiple profit centers.   All of these, of course, will require manufacturing, packaging and long distance hauling   As for skim milk, nature put fat in milk for a reason, and that reason was not to kill us.  When people drink skim milk, their bodies need and crave that missing cream, leading to compensatory bingeing on ice cream and other unhealthy treats high in both fat and sugar.   Low fat thus leads to increased consumption, more packages, more products, higher profits,  ill health and environmental destruction.
  7. The Environmental Working Group in its Meatless Monday promotions has reported that buying vegetables locally helps the environment, but buying eggs, milk, fish, poultry and meat locally has only a minimal effect.  Indeed, EWG cites this as a primary reason to cut back on all meat and adopt a “veg centric” diet. Such a bizarre finding could only be the case if the researchers evaluated the environmental impact of buying animal products from factory farms — including “Big Organic” operations — located close to home.
  8. Animals play a critical role in restoring our soil and growing nutrient-dense vegetables and fruits.  Without animals nearby, farmers must use fossil fuel fertilizers and/or compost and manure transported from far away.   Not good for the environment!
  9. Finally, if  people give up or minimize meat, what will they eat instead?    The Environmental Working Group suggests grains, beans and tofu.   In other words, vegetarian foods that are most likely grown and transported from a distance.     Furthermore,  the mistaken goal of eating less meat  will drive many consumers to buy processed and packaged vegetarian entrees full of soy protein isolate, corn syrup, MSG and other excitotoxins, “natural” or artificial colorings and flavorings as well as other dubious and non-green ingredients.   Furthermore, many of these so-called health foods contain GMO ingredients. Clearly, they are not an option for wellness seekers or environmentalists.

What to do instead?  Let’s commit one day a week to menus in which everything is local. One day a week to support old-fashioned farmers and ranchers and the co-ops and farmers‘ markets that support their efforts. For me, that means Meaty Mondays feasting on delicious local and in-season fruits and vegetables and grass-fed, sustainably produced meat, eggs and dairy. Mondays that taste and feel so good may soon become Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays as well.

Now that’s an idea that’s truly sustainable.

    Excellent summary, covering all the bases! As a former vegan/vegetarian I understand the mindset well. I also see being vegetarian as a mistake. My health is much improved in the 15 years since I started eating meat again. I was impressed with Lierre Keith’s book, The Vegetarian Myth. I would recommend it to anyone who really wants to understand what a vegetarian/vegan diet does to our bodies and to the ecosystem. This article however, very neatly summarizes the most important arguments in her book. Well done, and thank you Kaayla!

    Thank you for this, Kaayla. What a wonderful summary of it all. After fourteen years on the paleo diet and 8 years on raw paleo, there is more to learn and much more to stopping the destruction of the planet and our bodies.       “The brain thrives on animal fats and proteins for growth and emotional wellbeing.” Please provide references and identify the micro nutrients you are referring to as opposed to the food source, as the body could care less where the necessary micro nutrients are from. There are healthier sources for these micro nutrients and there are less healthy sources for them. I was on a whole food, grass fed Paleo diet for 18 months and followed my blood values before, during and after. As a general comment the key ones moved in the wrong direction. I removed the animal protein from my diet over the past 6 months and the values moved dramatically in the right direction. Any and all comments about specific food and diets in terms of them being healthier or “better” should be supported with scientific evidence impact on key blood values and health indicators. The China Study would refute most of the statements made here regarding animals as a source of protein and the silly myths regarding plant based diets.

    Brilliantly written! Bottom line, brilliantly written! Our soils, including pastureland, have been severely depleted in the last century by shortsighted farming practices. The resulting imbalance and deficiency of mineral nutrients has left us with nutrient deficiencies in our food because there are nutrient deficiencies in our soil. In order for our livestock to be nutrient-dense, our soil has to be nutrient-dense first. Only through nutrient balance and abundance in our soils, can livestock forage be nutrient-dense as well. If the nutrients are not in the soil, they can’t be in forage. If nutrient abundance is not in the forage, it can’t be in the livestock nor in the manure that is recycled back to the soil. When Sulfur, Phosphorous, Calcium, Magnesium, Potassium, Sodium, Boron, Iron, Manganese, Copper, and Zinc are in ideal quantities and ratios to each other, all living things have the nutrient-density they require by Nature, including our precious living soils first and foremost.     Oh if only my vegan/fruitarian daughter would listen. She’s very easliy led especially when it comes to diet and while she’s old enough to know when she’s not well and things aren’t working, it’s her influence on my 14 y/o granddaughter and my 6 y/o grandson I’m most worried about. My grandson never looks well, his skintone is actually grey, he has behavioural issues, short attention span, easily tired legs, clinginess behaviour, and the worst panda eyes I’ve ever seen on anyone. Everyone who sees him comments on how ill he looks. I’ve tried to talk to her but now she has cut me off.

And again, eating too much of anything places strain on the intestinal track as well as one’s kidneys and liver. So if your speaking in terms of individuals consuming 4 oz. of grass feed or free range beef, chicken, turkey or pork then state that. But assigning all the potential negatives from eating beef to factory farms, where essentially 90% of the meat consumed in the US comes from, then you probably should make statements within that context. And I would recommend that both yourself and your followers read The China Study, which was the most comprehensive study of nutrition ever performed. It is also the most referenced study ever performed. And let’s be clear if you going to brand yourself as someone who dispels myths then you should stop promoting the myth that individuals on plant based diets suffer from protein, vitamin and mineral deficiencies as that is simply not true. And you should perhaps identify the true facts regarding the overwhelmingly higher land and resources necessary to produce meat as opposed to producing plant based food. While I realize there is a need to be “edgy” to get noticed and gain enough eyeballs, you really need to reference your sources when you make sweeping, generalized statements that are not supportable.

    Reading the comments it is clear that you most likely moderate out the one’s that don’t support your context, statements or lack of references for any number of your incorrect generalized statements. I realize they hurt your brand and might impact you marketing and economic slant here. So please delete this comment along with my earlier ones that are on the mark. If you want to actually serve individuals by imparting solid nutritional advice, then put forth a bod cast where you debate Dr. T. Colin Campbell as he would take exception, based on the wealth of scientific evidence, with most of your positions despite your attempt to narrow the interpretation.

    most farmland is used for feeding animals.
    most water is used for raising animals.
    most deforestation is for pastureland for animals.
    our bodies are not meant to eat as much meat as people do at all.
    hence a dog can eat tons of eggs and have no cholesterol problems, yet a human can eat a ton of eggs and develop heart disease.

    maybe you work for the meat industry. not sure.

      No, but I sure do support small farmers and ranchers and the Savory Institute, a non profit that profoundly understands the important role of animals in healing the land.

    This is mixing up diet with sustainable farming practices. A vegetarian diet can be local and organic, and environmentally sustainable. So can a meat based diet. But I bet most meat eaters will not eat only meat that comes from sustainable farming. If you go to a restaurant you will be eating meat from who knows where.

    I agree wholeheartedly with your view that commercial farming practices lead to less nutritious and often unhealthy food. Factory farming in its current form is unsustainable, and demonstrably poisoning the animals, the environment, and the consumer. Even those of us who try to eat a healthy diet, whether paleo, vegetarian or vegan, with an emphasis on organic, will still test positive for an alphabet soup of toxic chemicals in our systems.

    I don’t believe that we should be steering people away from diets that emphasize plant based whole foods. The challenge with any diet is to be a conscious eater, thinking about the balance of the individual meal and your intake throughout the day. Most people on the SAD just grab whatever is convenient. Few will argue that is unhealthy to enjoy a diet that emphasizes lots of colorful greens, vegetables and fruits, balanced with nuts, seeds, legumes and whole grains.

    Absolutely, sustainability and good health can and should be achieved with farming practices that include grazing animals, and organic practices to the exclusion of toxic feedstuffs and agricultural chemicals like glyphosate.

    There may be a case to be made that moderate amounts of animal products provide health benefits, but IMHO they should not be the dietary emphasis. I believe that there is plenty of empirical evidence on longevity from sources like the China Study and Blue Zones that confirm people live longest and healthiest with a largely plant based diet with minimal animal proteins, and of course ample exercise and lower stress. The Okinawans and Seventh Day Adventists are classic examples.

      I certainly recommend lots of organic vegetables, preferably homegrown or local. Grains? Take care. So many people doing poorly on them today for a wide variety of reasons. Sadly nearly all of us today benefit from a gluten-free diet.
